Vineyard Update for Neal3

Neal3's picture
Neal3 is owned by Mark Neal, a meticulous grower who oversees vineyard management at Ink Grade and numerous other high-quality sites. This St. Helena vineyard sits adjacent to Hourglass Vineyard, where Bob Foley does his magic. Like its next door neighbor, Neal3 is planted to the "See" clone - an older clone of unknown origin that creates deep, structured wines. The rocky/gravelly soils are extremely well draining and produce small berries on very small clusters. This results in deeply colored wines with sturdy tannic structure.

09/30/200826.803.560.49So sorry for the late notice everyone, but we've got Neal 3 Cabernet finding its way into the winery tomorrow. Anyone who wants to sort their fruit, we'll hang onto the fruit in our cold room until Friday night. Looking forward to seeing as many of you Neal 3 winemakers as possible.

09/23/200825.000.000.60It seems like fruit in St. Helena is just ripening more slowly this year. Neal3 is moving along. but at a relatively slow pace. We're probably 10 days out.
09/18/200825.100.000.50Walked the block this morning and was happy to see healthy. green leaves that are still doing their job of producing energy to ripen the fruit. The berries are still quite turgid and there is still vegetal flavors in the skins. We're still 10 to 14 days out. KT
09/15/200824.900.000.60Neal3 is probably going to be the next Cab vineyard we harvest. Kian is heading up tomorrow to check it out. MB
09/04/200822.803.290.70This vineyard is looking very good. There is more afternoon-side sun protection in the form of flop-over shoots (instead of hedging. the shoots hang over and provide a little umbrella). Still a couple of weeks away.
06/13/2008   Neal 3 has been slightly hit by the frost las April. the damage were very minor. and the vines have now caught up. and our section is quite uniform. There is two distinct soils in this vineyard. we will be taking the rockier section See Clone on 110R. cane pruned. organically grown very well maintained by Patrick Riggs the vineyard manager.
05/02/2008   A little bit of frost was observed on the site. A shoot every 5 to 10 vines depending of the area. A lot of suckers are growing around the heads of these cane pruned vines. Special attention will be paid to suckering to avoid overload in the center of the vines.
03/25/2008   Visited the vineyard on March 19th. The buds were swollen. with the high temperature we are experiencing in Napa Valley. we can safely anticipate bud break happening anytime over the next couple weeks.
