Petite Sirah is neither petite nor is it Syrah despite the name. This grape is French in origin but has met its biggest success in the drier climates of America and Australia. The DNA analysis of this red grape shows it is a cross between Syrah and the grape Peloursin. Petite Sirah is also known as Durif. It produces small berries and tight bunches with medium sized clusters and ripens mid-season. Petite Sirah is prone to rot and does not grow well in humid climates. The wine is dark colored with strong tannins and crisp acidity and has the potential to age for extended periods of time. Petite Sirah produces dense blackberry fruit flavors with spicy black pepper notes. This is a rather minor grape varietal in terms of production, but one with a popular following. Petite Sirah is often used in the blend to compliment Zinfandel.
