Grenache

Grenache

From Enowiki, the free online winemaking encyclopedia

Grenache is one of the world’s most widely planted grapes. This varietal is best known from the red wines of Spain where it’s called Garnacha, but is commonly made into rosé wines as well. Grenache produces large compact clusters with thin skinned berries and ripens mid to late season. Grenache wines tend to be less tannic, soft, and very fruity. It can often develop fresh herb flavors to go with white pepper, raspberry, cranberry, and an occasional tobacco/ashtray aroma. This grape grows well in the hot dry Mediterranean climates. Grenache is often used to soften blends from other powerful Mediterranean red wines such as Mourvèdre and Syrah. Some new world regions like Australia also make this grape into a Port style dessert wine.
