To commemorate the famed Paris tasting of 1976, Crushpad hosted a
tasting rematch of current vintages of some of the original wineries
involved in the Paris tasting.
The tasting that took place in
76 had every opportunity to be just a simple publicity stunt that was
largely ignored by the mainstream press. But journalist George Taber
was there and chronicled what was unthinkable at the time -- that
upstart wine makers in California could create wines that were better
than the best French wines, wines that were known to be the best in
the world.
Before this tasting, winemakers all over the world
were making wine they simply accepted would never be as great or
respected as first growth Bordeaux or white Burgundy, now they too believed that they
could make the greatest wine in the world. So from that one simple
event, the modern world of winemaking was born. And we here at Crushpad
are trying to assist a similar revolution as people all over the world
learn they can make their very own world-class wine.
So we celebrate with a reenactment of that tasting, then we head off to watch the premier of "Bottle Shock," a movie based on the events surrounding the 76 Paris tasting.
