Biodynamics

Biodynamics

From Enowiki, the free online winemaking encyclopedia

Biodynamic farming is a unified approach to agriculture that relates the ecology of the earth-organism to that of the entire cosmos. This approach was first introduced in the 1920's in Europe, by Rudolf Steiner and made its way to the US in the late 1930's.

When farming with a biodynamic approach, the belief is that the quality of the product and the health of the land will increase, without the environmental problems generated by many modern farming methods. Biodynamic farming views the soil and environment as living organisms. It regards the preservation and maintenance of the soil as being essential to sustaining a healthy vineyard while maintaining its unique personality.

The maintenance of the soil is vital in protection from erosion and providing an environment for high quality crop production by regenerating its original energies. While not every grower/producer believes in biodynamic farming, producers such as Joly (Loire), Chapoutier (Rhone), Cayuse (Washington) and Araujo (California) are making wines of the highest quality while following these viticultural beliefs.
