Viognier

From Enowiki, the free online winemaking encyclopedia.

Viognier is the aromatic white grape from the Rhône Valley. This varietal was a near extinct grape that is recently enjoying a revival. Recent research suggests this grape may be clonally related to the oldest known cultivated grape Chasselas. Viognier is a difficult grape to grow with low yields and a susceptibility to disease. It prefers warmer climates and is an early ripening grape with small compact clusters and small berries. Viognier has a very distinct floral aroma that has a Muscat-like quality to go along with dried apricot flavors. This character gives a slight perception of sweetness to the wine even when bone dry. Viognier is occasionally used as a blending grape along with Syrah in the Côte Rôtie region as well as parts of Australia. This grape tends to be low in acid and short lived once bottled.
