Rhône Valley

The Rhône Valley, also called the Côte du Rhône, is a major wine region in southeastern France. The region lies south of Lyon stretching almost 100 miles from Vienne to Avignon along the Rhône River. This region is considered to have a distinct northern and southern portion with climates changing from cool to warm as one travels south. Most wine produced is red, but white and rosé volumes are steadily increasing. The Rhône is known for the large number of grape varietals that are grown throughout the region. The major red varietals are Syrah, Mourvèdre, Grenache, and Carignane. The trio of Marsanne, Rousanne, and Viognier are the common white varietals. These varietals are often referred to as Rhône style grapes.
