Marsanne is one of the popular trio of white grapes from the Rhône Valley. This varietal is almost always paired with its partner Rousanne. Marsanne is a very productive varietal with long compact clusters that ripens mid-season. The tight clusters can promote bunch rot and berry cracking which often results in browning and oxidation in the juice. Marsanne typically produces a big white wine that is high in alcohol with some ageing potential. Its flavors are rich and nutty with honeysuckle and some spiciness along with fruit characters of apple, pear and citrus. Marsanne can often lack acidity.
