The wife and I are seriously considering taking a stab at winemaking through Crushpad. It's an apprehensive but exciting feeling. This will either be one of the dumbest ideas I've ever had in my life or be one of the greatest experiments I have ever performed! My mind has been like a sponge the few weeks trying to deseminate all the information. I have a background in pharmaceutical fermentation, but this will be a new experience for me if we do indeed persue this.

4/28/08:
The check is in the mail! We were able to acquire enough grapes from the White Hawk Vineyard in Santa Barbara county to make 1 barrel. The last barrel's-worth from this vineyard for the 2008 harvest I was told! I took this as a positive sign, since this was the vineyard I had originally targeted for our Syrah. We've decided to brand our wine '2 Virgos', since both my wife and I were born under that zodiac sign. I will handle the winemaking decisions (with a lot of help from Crushpad, of course) while she will do the artwork and copy for the label.

Congratulations Rick! I've used White Hawk Vineyard for 3 consecutive vintages of Syrah: they're beautiful wines!

Thanks, Marilyn! I've been hearing that this vineyard has been producing some great fruit for Syrah. With your 3 years of Syrah experience, I'll bet you are really ahead of the curve in terms of winemaking with this varietal. I'm brand new to this, so any advice you have would be invaluable.

Advice? If you live in the Bay Area, it would be a great for you to attend the Syrah Wine Planning Seminar on June 5th. You'll get lots of ideas, info and input there. http://applications.crushpadwine.com/event/31.3
