In a warm section of the Petaluma Gap, Two Pisces offers up big fruit flavors
Mike and Teela Ridgeway planted Pinot Noir just west of Petaluma CA, and the many soil types on the property are all starved for moisture in most years. These dry conditions produce fruit that is very concentrated, and packs a bold ripe cherry profile with mineral and spice to balance it all out.
There are five different clones planted in rolling benchland blocks that range up to 800 ft. The vines are cane pruned, and the Ridgeways are mo...more |

Syrah from the Santa Maria Valley
Premier Coastal Vineyard is planted on rolling hills of sand in the northern, cooler, section of Santa Barbara County. These well-drained soils are really just sand dunes in much of the vineyard and this "soil" obviously holds very little water. This lack of water limits vigor, and generates smaller clusters, and small berries, which will yield concentrated wines. The east-west orientation of the coastal ranges in this area funnels even...more |

This Santa Lucia Highlands vineyard has it all
Doctors Vineyard is in the warmer end of the Santa Lucia Highlands AVA. Of course that's all relative because SLH is quite a cool AVA with a very long growing season. This long growing season creates grapes with tremendous character. Grapes from Doctors Vineyard show more bold fruit flavors than vineyards that are just a few miles away closer to Monterey Bay. The vineyard has multiple clones of Pinot Noir planted so this is one of those vineyards...more |

Grower Andy Mitchell shows us around Lone Oak Vineyard in the Santa Lucia Highlands
Lone Oak Vineyard is in the northern portion of the Santa Lucia Highlands AVA. Wine grapes were first planted in this region in 1790 by Spanish missionaries. However, it wasn't until 1991 that the Santa Lucia Highlands was granted AVA status. The Lone Oak Vineyard is relatively close
to Monterey Bay, and the strong afternoon maritime breezes, along with morning fog, influence the wines toward a classically structured Pinot. Vineyards farther s...more |

Patrick Mahaney gives us the inside scoop on the Gaps Crown Vineyard in the Sonoma Coast AVA
Gaps Crown vineyard is a young and promising vineyard near Petaluma
California. The vines are planted so that there are many more vines per
acre compared to the typical Pinot planting in California. This allows
The vineyard manager to hang much less fruit per vine, and still get a
yield that helps them stay afloat financially. The wines we've had from
Gaps Crown are concentrated but the cool growing conditions ensure that
the flavors are ...more |

What makes Eaglepoint the perfect spot for growing Rhone varietals? Casey Hartlip explains...
From the very start Eaglepoint Ranch was not like other vineyards. The
plan, devised by visionary horticulturist John Scharffenberger in the
mid 70s, was hatched well before the term biodiversity was in vogue
with grape growers. The vineyards of Eaglepoint Ranch are split into 29
small blocks totaling only 85 acres of vines on a ranch that is spread
over 1,200 acres of rugged mountainous terrain in Mendocino County.
Positioning the small vi...more |

Picking Syrah in the cool morning fog at Las Madres
John and Jean Painter tend this small vineyard in the Carneros AVA just north of San Pablo bay. We showed up early to catch sunrise in the vineyard on harvest day and found thick fog rolling across this beautiful vineyard. As John Painter explains in this video, Las Madres is planted to two different Syrah clones, which both lend their unique characteristics to wines from Las Madres.
