Vineyard Profile - Lone Oak Vineyard

Grower Andy Mitchell shows us around Lone Oak Vineyard in the Santa Lucia Highlands
Lone Oak Vineyard is in the northern portion of the Santa Lucia Highlands AVA. Wine grapes were first planted in this region in 1790 by Spanish missionaries. However, it wasn't until 1991 that the Santa Lucia Highlands was granted AVA status. The Lone Oak Vineyard is relatively close to Monterey Bay, and the strong afternoon maritime breezes, along with morning fog, influence the wines toward a classically structured Pinot. Those lees left behind are then dumped, the barrel refilled, and then topped with wine from the same vineyard. The process is done to clarify wines, move them to new barrels to add extra complexity from multiple types of oak, and to introdu...more

Budbreak in Grist Vineyard - Dry Creek Valley

The growing season is underway!
The growing season is moving along, and we're out looking over vineyards to see how things are going. Budbreak is the kickoff to the growing season when the vine pushes out woolly buds that then unfurl and lengthen into fresh green canes. The health of the vine going into the winter plays a big role in determining the potential for that vine the following year. Warren Burton from Grist Vineyard in Dry Creek Valley looks back at the winter and fil...more

When Frost Hits

What happens to vines after a spring frost?
Grape growers use any number of devices to protect vines from frost. You can turn on sprinklers to wet the vines, which prevents frost from forming, or the other common method is to use large fans to move the air through the vines, basically pushing the coldest air out and pulling in warmer air. But when those devices don't do the trick, or you're in a vineyard that has no frost protection, the beginning of the growing season can be a stressful t...more
